I recently visited a “barbeque joint” called Lone Star BBQ Tavern and Grille in South Carolina, which had a $16 all-you-can-eat buffet with fresh meat, BBQ, chicken, a cole slaw to die for, and a few other things that just didn’t fit.
This prompted me to write about fast food joints and options to eat on the road. Here goes…
- Avoid the McD, Wendys, Burger King, Arby’s и DQ. KFC is right out. Thou shall not eat at Subway or Taco Bell. Popeyes should also be avoided. Or thou shall snuff it.
- Wawa is actually one of the best choices on the East Coast. Seriously, Wawa is life!
- Mike’s Jersey Subs are okay but I only had them once so I can’t vouch for the whole chain.
- Chick-fil-A, Zaxby’s, Bojangles, and Hardee’s are okay if there’s no other choice. Of these, Zaxby’s is the best, then Hardee’s, then Chick-fil-A, then Bojangles.
- Larry’s Giant Subs are surprisingly good. I wish there were more of them. Also, that one location with a Gorilla with a sandwich in it is awesome.
- Five Guys is okay if you’re into yummy greasy food. Seriously, they’re fine, same level as Jimmy Jones, In-n-Out and Shake Shack. They are on the level, and if you have the right expectations — you won’t be disappointed. Also, bring wet napkins.
- Skyline Chilli — if you are really trying to gain weight at extra high speed. Your call.
- A lot of supermarkets have deli sections — Wegmans, Publix, etc. Florida has a whole religion around PubSub. They’re peaceful people unless you start talking shit about PubSubs. So, the first rule of PubSub religion is you do not talk shit about PubSub sandwiches. There are no other rules.
- Unique local places you should look up. Like this Lone Star BBQ place
The overall look of it was not inspiring but I still went in. It felt less like a tavern and more like “places I expect to see in the movies based around the Vietnam War era”. A lot of paraphernalia and mementos from 60s and 70s of last century, wooden tables, and so on. The whole place is, actually, several wooden huts connected together.
The food choices aren’t as wide as your average Brooklyn all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet, but with five or six various meats, about 10 sides, and some dessert, it fills you up pretty healthily. All for just $16 cover fee, which is insane. If you go to any of the chains above $16 may get you a full meal but it would be low on protein and high on cholesterol. Absolutely loved the place, the food quality is great, and there’s absolutely no reason to eat anywhere else if you’re in the area.
